What structured data is

Labels for machines. No visual change for users.

When you publish a blog post, the title, text, and images are what humans see. Structured data is a hidden label that tells machines: "This is an Article. It was written by this author. It was published on this date. The publisher is this organisation."

The format is called Schema.org. It is a standard agreed upon by Google, Bing, and other major search engines. The most common implementation is JSON-LD, a small block of text that sits in the page header or body without affecting the visible layout.

Think of it like a business card for your content. A human reads the page and understands the context. A machine reads the structured data and gets the same context in a format it can process automatically.

For German business websites, structured data is especially useful because it disambiguates your company identity across languages and domains. If you operate both .de and .com, consistent Organization schema with sameAs links tells AI tools these are the same entity.

Structured data is a business card for your content. It gives machines the same context that humans get from reading the page.
Why AI tools care

Structured data helps AI tools verify and attribute.

When an AI tool reads your page to decide whether to cite it, it needs to answer: Who wrote this? When was it last updated? What type of content is this? Is the publisher a verifiable entity? Structured data answers all four questions directly.

Without structured data, the AI tool has to infer these details from the page content. It might get the author wrong, miss the publication date, or fail to connect your page to your organisation. Each of these errors reduces your citation probability.

Google explicitly states that structured data helps its systems understand page content for features like AI Overviews. Bing says the same for Copilot. The markup does not guarantee a citation, but the absence of it makes one less likely. Schema work belongs inside a broader organic search programme, alongside content and technical fixes rather than a one-off plugin toggle.

Article

Use for any blog post, guide, or editorial content. Include headline, author, datePublished, dateModified, and image. This tells AI tools who wrote the content and when it was last reviewed. Yoast and RankMath generate this automatically.

Organization

Defines your company as a publisher. Include name, logo, URL, and sameAs links to your Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, and other verified profiles. This is the single most important schema for AI source verification.

Add structured data without code

Step by step, for WordPress site owners.

Install Yoast SEO or RankMath if you have not already. Both generate Article and Organization schema automatically.
In your SEO plugin settings, enable breadcrumbs. This activates BreadcrumbList schema output.
For each blog post, verify that Article schema is being generated (check with Google Rich Results Test).
Add a visible FAQ section to your top service or product pages using Gutenberg blocks.
Enable FAQPage schema in your SEO plugin for those pages. The visible content must match the schema exactly.
For custom schema beyond plugin defaults, use Schema Generator (schemagenerator.dev) to create JSON-LD.
Paste the generated JSON-LD into a Custom HTML block in Gutenberg or into your theme header via a plugin.
Validate every page with Google Rich Results Test. Fix any errors before publishing.

Do I need to learn to code to add structured data?

Does structured data change how my page looks?
